What would people think about a web browser widget, or add-on that shows updated posts, PM's new news and suchlike?

Most browsers already support some kind of built-in way to track such things using the RSS news feed for example. Don't think it would be that effective to write yet another browser addon that slows overall browsing experience.
Ok I was just wondering, because I know I would use it, and I was wondering what other people would think.

Also the RSS feed only shows new news doesn't it?

Depending on your reader it should always show the x latest entries (or just the new ones).
OK.
DOes google reader do that?
Also would it tell you about new threads and posts?

News only - don't think there's a feed for forums.
there's really not a need,because you can use google reader to subscribe to the forums,news,etc.
