I went to try https (I am attempting to do secure everything), and got an error message. Would it be possible for you to set up the server to use it?

Your (admittedly hashed, but no repeated iterations, just straight md5) password would still be sent to the game server in the clear.
If you are quite reasonably concerned about security, esp if you use strange networks, I'd suggest using a separate password for Hedgewars gaming.
