Hello everyhoggy,

Here's an idea I had a year ago, but never bothered to actually propose on this site (didn't even have an account badck then). It's more of a rant than anything and I'm not going to proof-read it, just pasting it here.

--Start of rant--

So what's up with the skipping on water and the way hedgehogs jump and roll? They're balls! Balls don't bounce on water, they're not shaped like the stones you throw at it to skip on it! Worms are shaped like that, but it doesn't make sense from a design standpoint to mindlessly adapt that mechanic other than "for fun"! Hedgehogs are not long or rope-like at all so they shouldn't behave like they are. They should roll around, gain momentum maybe even bounce a little more than they do now. Maybe allow us to enter ball-mode whenever we want during a turn so we can travel faster, finally nerfing the ninja rope. It won't be different for the sake of being different, it'll be different for the sake of being sensible. The only knowledge we have over the hogs and their capabilities is dictated by their appearance; in this case, they're round and ball-like. Let them behave like so and let us exploit those characteristics. FOR AMERICA

TLDR: make hedgehogs behave more like what they look like and less like what they were based upon.

--End of Rant--

Looking back at it I'm not exactly sure where I was going with this but I figured it'd be better to just paste it, maybe there's someone out there who somehow agrees, but I know I don't.

Nothing's worse than having to do stuff.

I think it's pretty funny that you would suggest an object that resembles basically a floppy string would bounce better than a round one.

Anyway. w/ enough speed at the right angle you can usually get at least one bounce out of most anything, regardless of density.

Simpler explanation?

IT'S JUST A GAME AND THE PHYSICS ARE EXPLICITLY NOT REALISTIC.

I agree, Hedgewars is a turn-based strategy comic-style game and not a physics simulation framework. AFAIK Hedgewars was never aimed at realistic physics. In comic-/ cartoon-land there are different rules than in real-land.
Hedgewars is comic-/ cartoon-style. This is why the hedgehogs are pink (not brown), this is why the hedgehogs can speak, this is why the hedgehogs can shoot bazookas, this is why a piano appears from the middle of nowhere etc. etc. etc. None of this would ever happen in the real world. Wink Smiley I hope you now get the point why your “realism” approach is totally wrong here and leads to nowhere.

"Hedgehogs are not long"—True, but the Hedgewars hedgehogs are also not long, I do not see your point here.

About the "ball physics" stuff: It would be nice if you would be more specific on that. As long as it adds something valueble to the gameplay, talk. I do not understand the part on "rolling around"—Currently, the hedgehogs roll a around (a bit) if the hit the floor with a bit horizontal momentum. I do not know if this was also the case a year ago.

Ball mode: I do not understand why this should add anything useful to the gameplay. Hedgewars’ hedgehogs are (very roughly) shaped like balls, but this alone is no reason the turn them into rubber balls if you mean that. I’d certainly fear that normal movement (that means, without any utilities like the ninja rope etc.) may become way too powerful where you can access many locations without using any utility. Maybe I got that all wrong and misunderstood your ball mode, in that case, you have explain further.

And another question: Why does that strange "Tumbler" game mode came into my strange mind all the time?

I have an idea for a compromise: Why not let the player configure some physics variables in the game scheme, like the "bouncyness" of a hedgehog? So anyone can set how bouncy or not bouncy the hogs are instead of discussiong endlessly about hard-coded constants. What do you think about that idea?

Nerfing the ninja rope: Are you fucking kidding me? The ninja rope is awesome! No, it shouldn’t be nerfed by default. However, if you do not like the ninja rope, you can simply create your own weapon scheme and throw the ninja rope out. Additionally, in the game scheme you already can set the rope length.
If you do not like the ninja rope in the way it works now, well, then you better be more specific what exactly of the ninja rope you want to be changed.

"FOR AMERICA"—What does your continentalism have to do with anything? Wink Smiley
