Hi,

My friend is running Windows 7 and was excited to try and play the game with me. He could play solo just fine, but when he tries to join an online game, he gets stuck at the "in game" screen.

I looked for some info on this problem on these forums, but only found a post about hwengine, but it was in French...https://www.hedgewars.org/node/3542

Any help would be very much appreciated! I'm posting on his behalf (he doesn't write English that well), so forgive me if I don't reply immediately. I'll have to ask him for any follow up questions.

So. The most common reason for this to happen is a graphics driver bug causing the engine to crash on creating the OpenGL context. Updating the graphics card driver might help. Hedgewars does *not* do anything very sophisticated graphics-wise, but Windows has always been kinda OpenGL hostile. Online, since WebGL is basically GLES2, Firefox and Chrome work around this Windows problem with ANGLE which reimplements as much as possible (setting aside things like line widths which hedgewars does use), GLES2 in DirectX. We haven't experimented with using this yet.

If he posts a game log, that would help. On Windows that would be in My Documents/Hedgewars/Logs - could look to see when/where it is dying.

Another thing that can happen is some antivirus system blocks the launch of the game engine, hwengine.exe or the communication between the engine and the frontend. The game log would offer clues there too. He could maybe tell us what AV/Firewall he's running and try suspending them to debug, or check the AV/Firewall logs.

If the graphics card is simply wimpy and the system is stressing, Windows 7 still allows disabling compositing by choosing Optimise for Speed in system settings. It was the last version of Windows that allowed this I believe.
