is there any good tutorials how to get started with this hatdrawing?
No. Documentation on hats is very poor indeed, and this is especially bad, since hat drawing is tricky to get into. Maybe I write a guide soon, I recently also wrote guides for flags and graves.
the link is dead like all other too
Not surprising, since only one-click and temporary image hosters here used, the images were uploaded long time ago and now the hosters deleted it. Silly, right? I wonder when people start to learn not to trust one-click hosters, especially not for long-term use.
-how to get hats overlayed?
First you have to know where the hat is placed. That’s relatively simple: Take the idle hedgehog graphic (Data/Graphics/Idle.png) as reference. Your hat will be drawn 5 pixels higher. If you just want to make a hat without any fancy animation, you still have to repeat the graphic 18 times for each frame. But that’s not enough: In the idle animation, the hedgehog moves slightly up and down, so must the hat. In the third, eighth and thirteenth frame, the hedgehog is one pixel lower than in the first frame and in the seventeenth frame, the hedgehog is one pixel higher. So on those 4 special frames, you have to also move the hat accordingly so it perfectly matches the Hedgehog idle animation. To simplifiy all that, I have created this template: You can use this template as a background layer and delete this layer when you’re finished. This shows the idle hedgehog, but moved 5 pixels down and the lower 5 pixels of each frame cut off. I also conveniently draw a colorful raster. The green and red fields are special: On the green fields, the hedgehog is one pixel lower, on the red fields, it is one pixel higher than on the first frame. You can check for yourselves that this template works by opening it in an image editor and overlaying any of the official hat images (except the “team” ones).
what did i wrong? and what is this white line at the head of the hogh? is this for the orientation to draw hats?
Yes, this strange white line is just for orientation. You should delete it and replace it with your hat. Sadly, the using the SVG template will not produce pixel-perfect output when you export it, well, at least not with Inkscape and GIMP. The three last images at the right upper part are slightly misplaced and this is noticable in the final animation. When I created my first hats, I manually placed the last images again. For static hats, I think a good workflow would be: Create hat (preferably) as SVG (so it becomes easier to modify later). Export it as 32×32 pixel image. Then, using the template, manually align and copy the image to the other frames.

wow thx dude! This is already very helpfull. Ok i think i got it now but have still some questions. 1-can i use reallife images? for example i found this stupid red hat and skaled it to 35 pixel size. and it doesnt look so bad... 2-when i want to draw my own hat i just cant draw it from pixel to pixel so i draw a normal size picture and skale it down? or like you said "Export it as 32×32 pixel image"? i think i will experimet for a while with this and see what i can create Big Grin thx so far
1-can i use reallife images?
Well, of course you can use real-life images. You can use any image you want, in theory, as long as the image follows the basic patterns, of course. Wheather the hat looks good in the end is a completely different question, of course. Big Grin
for example i found this stupid red hat and skaled it to 35 pixel size. and it doesnt look so bad...
I don’t agree. This hat looks pretty bad in Hedgewars, because it is also badly aligned and the animation does not match the hedgehog in idle state. Have you tested the hat? If you overlay it over my template, you can easily see how portions of the hat reach over to other tiles, this is clearly wrong. Also, anti-aliasing of this hat is also poor, I can see awful white borders.
2-when i want to draw my own hat i just cant draw it from pixel to pixel so i draw a normal size picture and skale it down? or like you said "Export it as 32×32 pixel image"?
Actually that’s up to you. You can directly start with a 32×32 pixel image, or you could start with a large image and scale it down, or you could start with a SVG image and scale this one to 32×32 pixels. And maybe there are even more ways, but it’s really just up to you how you actually do it.
Maybe someone do this hat? for example:
Yup This was the closest i can do. I had to even recreate the image because your was out of 32x32 boundary and it had black background. However i grabbed the barrel from the Data files and its also out of boundary so i had to cut it to 30x30, just so i can do even offsets. Also, since imgur renames the files, rename it to "barrelhider_v1" without quotation marks (") While i dont wanna get a doublepost, heres a TeamHedgehog hat that i use on my dummies. Rename it as "TeamHedgehog_v1" without quotation marks (")

@Karol: Maybe it could work better when the barrel is scaled down first, then add the eyes and apply offset.

Fdito, your facehugger and ironman hats are nice, but just not my taste. Your godzilla hat is cool but it looks very badly displaced on the actual hog. For your iron man voice: Well, its pretty incomplete, isn't it? Most sounds are just copies from Robot and even the few actual new voices are just repeated. Sorry, this does not really make a voicepack. In this state, it's not worth keeping.
TheMadCharles has created a proper “barrel hider” hat now (licended under CC-BY 3.0) which I have just reuploaded for your convenience: It works really great and is much better than the first try. It is on par with bushhider and cratehider. The official hat file name is “karboy_barrelhider3.png”. This file is taken from this collection thread: http://hedgewars.org/node/6040 But note this is a bit chaotic here. As a sidenode, TheMadCharles also created some new colored hairs which I also like and a “birthday” hat. Look it up for yourselves. There are also tons of other hats but I don't think they are worth a mention.

Hi all! Time for a new round of hats. I think Hedgewars has far too many “hats” which are not really hats but instead masks, costumes, or weird “mutations”. Okay, they are fun and stuff, but Hedgewars overdoes it at the moment. If I counted it correctly, hats (actual hats) are in the minority. I'd like to see more “classical” hats, that is, those things you put on your head. No overly complex things with facepaintings and other complex stuff. Keeping it simple would be good. I have created a bunch of new hats by using existing hats and removing some of the “extras”, like factial hair, face markings, etc., so that only the hat itself remains. I like to keep it simple. Those are not meant as replacements, only as alternatives. Kid, you cannot post a file directly from your computer, you should send it to internet first. So, 1) register on dropbox 2) upload an image file 3) request and copy a link 4) paste it here Or simply play games. Писать кстати по-русски можешь.

You can use absolutely any service that allows posting an image, so yeah, deviant art probably qualifies. Heck, you could use your home computer if you installed a web server and had a stable IP or used a dynamic dns name service.

Well, you place your hat in the correct directory and then create a team where at least one of its hedgehogs has the hat you want to test, and then you just need to play with this team and look at your hedgehogs. Look closely at your hedgehogs and their hats and watch the entire animation. Normally you should make sure the hat stays on the hedgehog's head and doesn't bounce around (unless that's intentional). This is a common mistake made by newbies. If you created a hat with custom team colors, you should also test you hat with at least all the default team colors to make sure it doesn't look like shit. Im on linux,Ubuntu.
Place your hat .png into: $HOME/.hedgewars/Data/Graphics/Hats You might have to create those subfolders. Make sure to get the letter cases right. Then restart Hedgewars and you should be able to select your hat in the team settings. And about your other question: Usually we devs harvest the forum for hats every now and then. So we're the ones that decide what we think fits the game and what doesn't. If you hat doesn't make it into official release, we may put it up on DLC for you and other players to fetch.
Do you mean "Original hedgehog" (the one without hat) then get it here : %Hedgewars%\Data\Graphics\Hats get it where the Hedgewars placed then go to Data\Graphics\Hats Then search for "NoHat". That one ? or do you mean "Some Hats Templates" (Basic form?) ? Then get those Templates in %Hedgewars%\Data\Graphics\Hats Same as above, take a look in where Hedgewars was placed then go to Data\Graphics\Hats Then you will meet some tons of cute and ugly hats in it That's it, use them all as template or reference Make them as the starting point then Blast them off to be what you want If those basic things above doesn't fit your question I Provide you with some Basic Templates in Hats Making Then take these links :D Non-Team Hats Template Non-Team Hats Template in XCF for GIMP user Team Hats Template Team Hats Template in XCF for GIMP user
Good news, everyone! In version 0.9.23, creating static hats is now easy as pie! To create a hat without animation, you now only need a single 32×32 image! You can use this template to align the hat pixel-perfectly: Static team hats have been simplified, too. They can be done with 2 frames. Read (or re-read) [kb]Hats[/kb] to learn more. Of course, the good old animated hats haven't changed, they are still 100% supported.
@Zepryzzh: Try to first make a vector graphic (maybe with Inkscape), then export it to PNG. This is how most images in Hedgewars are created.

Well, it's not much of an use if you don't upload the hat file, you know? Wink Smiley Personally, I'm not a big fan. The lines look to thin and don't match well with other hats. It looks like you drew it by hand. Maybe it's also because I like “real” hats more (i.e. no hair, just simple headwear).

You are right that I hand-drawn them. It's just last time I tried making hat SVG, after converting it to image it just lost the details due to scaling and interpolation and stuff. So this time I tried some pixel art to see how would it look. I didn't upload hat files, because I wanted first to ask if they look alright and if they are recognizable. Though seeing how many people read this forum, I doubt I'd get answer on the latter xd Anyways, I tried a new trick: I upscaled my pixel version of hats and redrew them in Inkscape and exported bigger image, setting the right size in export options. This the effect for first hat: (to the left is the new one) And second hat: Do they look any better now? Here's a convenient hwp with both versions, if you are interested: https://ufile.io/khbkl
