Improve the rope control

Hello people.

First, congratulations for Hedgewars. This game seems very promising to a wonderful future. The musics are great, the graphics are nice and the develepement is active.

When I saw the Shoppa game mode, I said : "Wow, incredible !!". I tried it. The rules are okey.. but the rope control wasn't so really nice... I have some suggestions for improve the rope control.

Yes, see this situation :

Indeed, as you can see the direction of the next rope is bad. I think to a better rope control.

1) I think you have to change the direction to the symetrical compared to vertical. If the rope as more than 45° (than the vertical), set the next rope direction to 45° (opposite than the actual direcion, of course).

Like this : (red : the actual direction, green : the next direction)

2) Why we have to keep spacebar pressed ? When spacebar is pressed, the rope is launched.

The rope control is going to be more dynamic, and better.

To say it clearly : I love the worms rope gameplay and I hate the current Hedgewars rope gameplay.

I like when you don't have to think to the direction of the rope... don't you like the Worms gameplay ??

I understand that you want to keep the current gameplay, so you can add an option to change it ! Hedgewars will become 40% better with the worms rope gameplay !! Really.

First: You are not very good at explaining how you would like it, but I suppose you want it like Worms.

Well, in my opinion, it would be devastating to use the worms style of roping. The way that the rope works right now, I think, is much better and you have a lot more control. You just need to get used to it, if you have played worms a lot.

If you really love the worms rope gameplay -> why not play worms? This is not worms, and I would find it a terrible shame if someone changed the way that the rope works.

Well... sorry if my explaining wasn't good... I just try to explain that the next rope direction need to be the vertical symetrical than the previous direction. (In the 45° limits).

Worms isn't open source, Worms isn't under linux. Worms is old and not active...

But in my humble opinion, Hedgewars could one day be better than Worms. But the rope is essential for Shoppa game. See a real Shoppa, or a w2w (wall to wall ; you have to touch the 2 walls before attacking). The gameplay is really dynamic and fast and you don't have time to control the direction in air. Have you ever play a shoppa mode in Worms World Party ? I love this gameplay. If I can play at this, with an opensource game, I'll be impressed. Furthermore, you just have to add one option, so you can continue to use the current gameplay, like "Enable the dynamic rope control".

Well, actually there is a looooooooong discussion about the rope in the forum (not THAT long as the cake of course). A very simple explanation was provided (I think by Tiyuri) - Worms became a rope-game. Almost every single aspect in the gameplay had something to do with the rope. Better leave it the way it is. Smile You'll have to accept it and have in mind the direction of your shot with the rope every time you want to use it. Wink Smiley

Are you talking about the network game ? -> I'm not sure of that. I think there is 40% rope, 60% other. (I play the two mode, I like both. The 'normale' mode is very fun, and the Shoppa/Rope mode is challenging)

Also in Worms, you can throw bazooka or grenade by the rope, with the current amount of speed. That's great for throw grenade and go out with the rope.

The choice of the direction in air is really not dynamical for the rope gameplay...

Why you don't want to provide the two version ?

This is worms knock off right? The reason why this game was made was because of the concept, and how addictive it can get. So, the rope is a very integral part of worms/HW game play. And in fact it is extremely fun to use rope, but in some cases roping can become impossible because of the angle in which you shoot it. I am not suggesting that sophisticated rope control is put in, but the rope has got its issues and difficulties. I agree that it could do with a little work.

i like that the angle is the way it is, but it should be possible to force the hedgehog to shoot the rope to left or right.

fallen into the water plenty times because it suddenly changes direction just before i hit space to throw another rope Smile
