game stops to "In game...." screen / Jaunty

on ubuntu jaunty (9.04) the game stops in the middle of the game and the first screen appears (the one with the falling stars) having just the letters "in game..." on it
if someone can help me solve this, i would really appreciate it 
Means that the actual engine, hwengine is not starting.
As a test, please go to settings and disable Music and Sound then restart the game.

the one using the jaunty machine started playing through windows today and it worked ok
sorry i haven't said that before
it started happening to my karmic as well though, so i will try what you said there
