I can not see the map in Hedgewars 0.9.12. I have Ubuntu 9.10

We can't help unless you tell us your graphics driver at least (and your actual GPU model if you can). run this command from a terminal (under accesories)
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep 'Driver'
and post the output.
EDIT: and could you please post the output of
lspci | grep 'VGA'
