You can use the forcefield item (I've forgot what it's called) to protect from falling damage.

if i was to fall from 100 stories high and land on you, who would survive... you can figure that one out can't you?

things like sheild, Vamp, and Extra damage will effect the outcome...
also to get more damage use the rope directly above (make sure your not moving) and push down before releasing.

FWIW, there are some restrictions on fall height and speed in .14
