I've noticed how little the hedgehogs move, unless it's their turn or they are flying across the map, so lately I've been creating action and reaction sprites, like having a hedgehog trying to block a shot being fired at him like so:

And, if he happens to miss, the hedgehog can taunt him:

But if a grumpy hedgehog decides to place a dynamite beside him, he screams:

However, in the end, he and his buddies end up winning the epic match, so they wave to the cheering crowd:

Suggestions for new sprites? Comments? Criticism?
NOTE: These are not changes to the game I have made, I am just showing off new sprites that I have made.

Tiy had wanted to do more animations, more detailed animations and animation sprites for portions of the hog body for a long time (things he incorporated into his new game).
The main issue is the hats.
Either these animations would have to make the hat disappear, or else hats would have to be updated to correspond to any new game animation,
which would mean updating all the hats.
A new hat format could of course be specified that extends the frame list for the animations, degrading gracefully to the old format, but it would still look odd on the old hats.

Those times the hat disappears now, already look kind of odd, despite having removed places it used to happen, like when jumping or using a rope.

I like your animations though!

They'll just have to be no-hat for now :\.

One thing I'm planning to make is several animations that the hedgehogs preform when they're idle, like playing with a yo-yo, or eating a snack, or pretending to shoot another hedgehog...

By the way nemo, I guess I'm the main artist for Hedgewars now! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

We'll have to wait until I finish them and nemo codes them into the game.
By the way, I have been using this to make the sprites.

Another issue with facial expression is orientation. The hog's eyes/head for example do not track the gun barrel. This again runs into the mask problem, since many masks do not have "eye holes".
If eyes were drawn on top, it would also look bad on many hats.
There's that balance between simple sprites people can easily add, and more complex ones with greater expression.

Updates:
If the hedgehog happens hurt himself, another hedgehog nearby will laugh at him:

And I created another waving animation, to be used when an idle hog waves at the hog that is taking his turn, if they are of the same color:

I also added on to the screaming animation so the hedgehog rolls into a ball right after.

Interesting, so how many animations are we likely to see?

It's high time I've updated this thread :P.
Anyway, here's the sprite sheet of all the sprites I've made. NOTE: None of the animations have been tested out, so they may look weird. If this happens, please contact me.

Did this ever get implemented? Last time I played this game was back in 2011 but I switched back to WA because the static idle hedgehogs just irritated me too much.

It did, partially. Hedgehogs will react if something is going to explode close to them. Also, crashing RC plane will make your hog sad. Other than that there aren't other reactions though, but you can react yourself with /commands (e.g. /wave).

Thanks for the reply. That's nice to hear, I was hoping for more animations while it wasn't that specific hedgehogs turn but even so. Nice effort from everyone involved. Will give it a shot again next time we get together with some buddies.

We could definitely use more reaction images.... artists welcome!

The only issue really is hats. Typically it's easier to make hats go away for a reaction.

We'd have to break up the hats or make the format more complicated to keep them on when hog moves around more.

I'd go for breaking up hats. Hats should not be a reason to stop us from adding more hog animations.

Maybe 3 categories:

- Hats: For actual hats which you put on head. These MUST be lightweight and not alter the face or oterwise mutate the hog, otherwise it's for Masks or Crazy. Hats are allowed to disappear. Example: Cowboy
- Masks: For clothes which cover part or all of the face, they are NOT allowed to disappear with maybe a few exceptions. Example: scif_DarthVader
- Crazy: For all the weird stuff which doesn't fit into Hats or Masks. Usually these change the body of the hog itself, like mutations. They are also not allowed to disappear. Exmample: DayAndNight. Crazy is also useful to deactivate them on client-side

The benefit of “real” hats is that we might even safely combine them with at least some hog animations, like talking.

I'm against making the hat format even more complicated than it already is. IMO, hats should be lightweight decorations and not be uber-complicated stuff full of questionable features.

As nemo said: If someone is willing to draw us some nice hedgehog animations or just any reaction images, this would help a lot. See also: https://hedgewars.org/node/6891

Right now, we have more hats than actual hedgehog animations which is just absurd.
