THIS IS THE BEST- HAHAHAHA sorry I couldn't say that with a straight face.

All joking aside, this is impossible, because why would a huge corporation like Team17 side with a handful of FOSS developers to make a game? Also, how on earth would they contact them? nemo lives in canada, UnC0Rr is in russia, ect. ect.

Also, we don't want hedgewars to become worms. Hedgehogs EAT worms.

if we play to hedgewars and not to worms its becase we prefer it,
i don't like worms style (ok i didn't play it since years )

so, man, stop with worms, deal with hedgehog, come with original idea if you have, but stop with worms

If you want a game that's exactly like worms, then go play worms.

this will be based on hedgewars code and will have side 1 (hedgehogs) or side 2 (worms)

That's what we thought you meant. If you REALLY want worms in hedgewars, then just make yourself a texture pack.

Oh boy, come on!

Hedgewars is not Worms: Armageddon!

Deal with it.

In all truth, I have felt this way many times. This is not a criticism of Hedgewars or its developers. The only real reason I ever started playing Hedgewars, and still play it now, is because its the closes Free Software Project to Worms.

Worms 2 and Worms World Party were some of my most favourite computer games of all time. Worms World Party is basically Worms Armageddon with Worm Pot.

I still miss Worms World Party. The second generation of worms games were the best in my opinion. I could sit and play them for hours.

My first impulse with looking at Hedgewars was also to want to see it become Worms World Party. The 'problem' with this is that Hedgewars Team and most of its users don't want Hedgewars to become Worms.

To me, it's kind of like a remake to an old and loved movie. The remake doesn't want to be the same thing that came before. The people making it have their own tastes, goals, and agendas. They want to do something new and fresh. And yet, there will always be those that don't want new and fresh.

Honestly, and no insult intended, if Worms Armageddon had its source code released as Free Software I'd be playing it instead.

So much so, that I have made a forum post on Team 17 trying to get momentum going in that direction and using ID Software and Doom as showing how a commercial property can still be viable even with its source released. I even e-mailed once (maybe twice) the Team 17 licensing department asking about this.

There are about five real options here.

1: Accept Hedgewars for what it is.

2: Accept Worms Armageddon for what it is.

3: Somehow get Team 17 to release the source. Can fans buy the rights? How much would it cost to buy the rights to a game more than ten years old?

4: Use the Hedgewars Source Code as a launching point to create a forked project. Being under a Free Software Licence, users are able to make and distribute modified versions of the program. As such, if someone really wanted to they could make a Hedgewars game work like Worms. It would not be copyright infringement as long as no code, images, or sounds are used from Worms. As long as the name Worms is not used, it shouldn't be trademark infringement either. It might make more sense to use the Hedgewars Source as a starting point rather than making a new engine from scratch because it runs so similar to Worms anyway. I thought about trying to make such a project myself. However, I don't know how to program. Even if I did, there are still way too many weapons and utilities that would have to be programmed from scratch (or almost from scratch) to get Hedgewars up to par with Worms Armageddon. It's almost up there with Worms 2. But, think about, there is no Homing Cluster Bomb, no Homing Air Strike, no Mail Strike, nothing even close to a Sheep; and so on.

5: It does seem that Cyber Shadow has started a Free Software Worms Armageddon Engine. AE (Armageddon Engine.) https://github.com/CyberShadow/ae
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how close it is to being done. Maybe if Cyber Shadow had more funding? I'm thinking of e-mailing Cyber Shadow and asking.

This option would make the most sense, as it would be designed specifically to work with the images and other resources of Worms Armageddon itself. Also, Cyber Shadow works on the Worms Armageddon Patches and might have the skills needed to write an entire engine replacement; as Cyber Shadow does have access to the actual source and would have the best vantage for writing a replacement for it.

Hedgewars is fun, but it's not the same as Worms; nor was it designed to be. I miss Worms, and would really like a Free Software native GNU/Linux port of it.

I chose option "1: Accept Hedgewars for what it is.". Smile
Guess many of us old Hedgewars players just got used to the game as it is and don't really like that other game much anymore.

Any chance we can get an option to report spam posts like the one before this one?

The best antispam measure is to ignore such messages.
Sooner or later the poster will get bored to write stuff without replies...
