Quick and easy suggestion for next version

Can some kind of audio be added to user rooms to let afk players know someone is there? I usually multitask when I play. I'll create a room sometimes and surf the tubes while waiting for users to join. Unfortunately, I might miss people joining and have to annoyingly switch windows every few secs to check. Adding an audio alert would help. Maybe it can be a setting where you can add sound in rooms when someone texts a message or something. That will probably be best and help in rooms where users just want to chat.

... doesn't this already exist? As far as I know a hog says 'Hello!' when a new player joins the room. You might not hear it if your audio is turned down or you are listening to music, though.

Ah, the music part might be an issue for me.

In terms of the suggestion though, I should have explained the issue in better detail or maybe I just have something configured wrong.

As a host, I might be afk or maybe have watched a quick video, etc. Regardless for some reason I might have missed the quick hello for users entering. Having an additional alert can help me know, hey there are people waiting, come and play or hey you forgot hw is still running.

As a client when I join the room I have no indication that the host was informed of my presence. The host may receive a "hello" but as a client I don't hear anything or have no way or re-informing the host that I'm here and alive. Maybe I decided to wait for the host to re-enter and am browsing myself. How does the host let me know, hey I'm back get ready?

At certain times at night the server can be pretty dead. Sometimes you join a room and wait for a host to be active or see if someone else joins to start another room. Having an additional audio alert would be nice to let people know someone is around.

I'm suggesting maybe an option for a text alert or a method for a user to audio ping.

As a client I also don't receive alerts when other users join. Maybe its a setting I'm using or a bug? I have both front end sounds and enable sound checked but the other options unchecked, and I'm using a windows version. If it is a setting, is there any way to maybe look into the labeling as it can be confusing to try to understand the difference between enable sounds and enable front end sounds. Maybe not so much for a developer but for a casual user, it can be a bit unclear.

Client can audio ping host by typing a message starting with their name.
Just like IRC, you can tab complete.
So, to ping me as host if for some reason I didn't hear the "hi"

n+TAB
should result in
nemo:

sooo...

nemo: Play?

Should beep at me. Repeat as necessary.

Also, to improve your chance of hearing the Hi, try disabling frontend music (but not sound!) and increasing volume on that app (if you're using something like pulseaudio that allows per-app sound) or just sound across system in general if it isn't going to blast too much.

Nice. If you can put that in a button with an option for a host to enable/disable it in their settings; I think it'll be great. I know you guys got a million things to work on for the game and it might be a bit annoying to hear something you already thought about or have implemented.

But I definitely appreciate the feedback. Having played the game regularly for years and not knowing some of these things, might kind of help demonstrate how lazy some game players are and how important some of the work you guys have been doing on usability are. Wink Smiley

I do still think an option for a chat sound in the main room would be nice. Thanks again.

I would just like to add. Would it be possible to somehow have a separate option for front end sounds, and the audio alerts? I put off the front end sound because after a while, the 'step' sound which plays when you hover over an icon annoyed me. It's really not a big deal, but I thought this might be the place to just point that out.

I think the step sound should be more subtle, instead, CheezeMonkey - I don't think it warrants a new option.
I modified it in 0.9.19 already to only trigger when you click on a widget (FocusIn)

But, I think it still could use a new sound. Could you provide one?

I think the methods for notifying an admin if someone joined the room, and for someone to ping an admin are adequate. The ping is generic, so a bit more generally useful (works in main lobby too)

I personally don't feel there's any great pressure to add more buttons.

If you'd like to mute these sounds, you can do so from config. Since config is accessible from the room, it is easily toggleable (although there was a bug in .18 if you had sounds disabled on startup, then enabled - that's fixed in .19)
