When I'm bored...
Yesterday I was really bored so I thought that my PC hidden sowhere in the basement needs second life. So I decided to install couple of OS onto the beast that is:
-Pentium 150 MHz without MMX
-48 MB RAM
-ATI Rage II+ (4 MB/PCI) < there's no AGP on the mainboard
-10 GB HDD
Started with 98 SE. Here I realized that playing mp3 and downloading huge file with a Firefox 2.0.0.20 can make DL speed twice as slow. You can see the video here > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_IOKaSA_oM
Also Unreal Tournament is veery slow with this setup even on lowest settings possible ranging from 7 to 10 fps (Not to mention transparency problems or lack thereof)
However it wasn't the main event. I installed SliTaz linux distribution with pure CLI interface so system would use up to 8 MB after boot. And i wondered how much it would take to compile Hedgewars.
On my 6 core Phenom II X4 960T (unlocked)@3.0 GHz it takes around 30 seconds and on Celeron 2.0 GHz it took 8 minutes. But noooo, it takes longer... Didn't know how much longer. Sooo this is the result
Yes, it took 3.5 HOURS to finish the job. And recording was disabled because packages were too old to compile it. In reality it would take even more time.

Yeeaaah, me and my brother actually got an old DOS computer hooked up and working in our basement. It's a real boredom saver!
One likely reason for the length of time of the compile is shortage of memory causing swap thrashing.
And, well, frontend is pretty slow to compile, even w/ -j4 or -j8 or whatever your CPU can manage.
Compiling the engine is probably pretty fast even on such old hardware

It took 92 seconds. And yeah, swap was used to compile almost every file of the frontend. At the finish there was over 130 MB used out of 500.
