Game freezes at "in game" screen.

I just loaded hedgewars on an older laptop running Linux Mint.
The system runs stable and the load went without any errors. I start the game and can navigate between the screens, change preferences, go to the read about screen etc. When I try to start any sort of game it freezes on the in game screen. The star background stops moving and the keyboard commands stop working. I have to ctl-Q and stop the whole game to get out.
Any ideas?

Typically means no opengl support, so launching the game failed.

You can try sharing your ~/.hedgewars/Logs/game0.log to doublecheck.

Simple things to try under linux:

$ DISPLAY=:0 __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 vblank_mode=0 glxgears
101637 frames in 5.0 seconds = 20327.229 FPS

It should run, and run quickly.
$ DISPLAY=:0 glxinfo | grep "direct render"
direct rendering: Yes

Should say Yes.

gears turn fine, yes to direct render and the driver manager is part of the new Mint. I needed to use it to figger out my Broadcom 4318 issue.

New observation
When I start a game a terminal window opens, nothing is on it, then it goes away after a second or two. I tried to capture it but it doesn't respond to clicking.

Memory is solid at about 50% usage and CPU is about the same, a few dips and rises but never above 70% CPU.

Strange. I *think* the log is halting at loading locale... that's odd.

So, while I'm pondering this... the other reason we used to have trouble was badly configured sound. That's been rare lately.

You could try unchecking both game music/sound and frontend music/sound in frontend config. Then restart.

But, I don't think that's the issue ...

As for the terminal window, that's probably the game window. It seems the gl context gets created.

We could probably figure this out really quickly if you did a debug build and sent us a stack trace.

I have the same problem, but I think the randomizer's broken. I have the same result if I choose another map, other than the one that it first gives me. Also, I'm not on Linux, so I can't do, whatever advice you gave him.

Not too sure what you mean by a "broken randomiser" but opengl is even more often a problem under Windows.
Would need more details about your setup though.
