Old skype for linux/ubuntu (alsa compatible) download locations
UPDATE: as far as I am aware this version of skype is no longer able to logon. However, you might want to checkout the new "skype for linux" alpha - or the very similar web-skype beta, which work with alsa just fine.
Since I'm quite unhappy with how Skype 4.3.0.7 turned out, here's a link to skype version 4.2.0.11 for those who regret the update as well:

<@nemo> sheepluva: huh. what happened in the new skype?
<@sheepluva> nemo: new interface, some bugs and it works with pulseaudio and with pulseaudio ONLY
Conspiracy hypothesis: Microsoft did that on purpose. They know exactly what they are doing.
Conspicary paranoia aside, why not giving free software and open protocols a try instead, like Ekiga (based on SIP)?
Hi, I am a Hedgewars developer.
Yes, they did so on purpose.
You can't logon with old versions of skype on Linux/PC/Android - the auto-login tokens are not working anymore either (they worked for some weeks longer than manual logon).
New Linux Skype now ONLY works with PulseAudio (which is broken for me and many others), ALSA support was dropped.
So currently I have to run Skype with apulse. But the new Skype is ofc even more broken than the old skype.
I am looking more and more for alternatives and Ekiga looks promising - I'll give it a try, thanks!

There's nothing good with using proprietary software. Try Tox.
