In another episode of "CopherNeue retouches a thing that's been made before", I did some minor touch-ups and such to make the Beach theme more HW art guideline friendly. Less gradients, adjusted colours and less noise filter await you! Specifically, I've reduced the saturation of the colours a wee bit, and tweaked the designs to be more "fun". I also made sure the theme works as a whole.

Ok well, I didn't completely change everything, just the things that stood out to me. There's some stuff from the original theme in there.

Preview:

Latest Download:
Download v2
Changes: Alfadur very kindly provided a hedgecastle object! I would say it looks quite good Smile I've also swapped out the old flake into a new one, with a fancy animation and all.

Old Version:
Download v1
SVG zip
(Note: You may find the LandTex as SVG doesn't actually tile that well. Sorry about that, I actually fixed it in Photoshop. Hopefully I won't have that problem again when I make more themes.)

If you have any thoughts and critique, please send them my way. I want to make the theme the best I can. Definitely guarantee that this is not the first iteration of this theme.

Last of all, have fun! Big Grin

P.S. Here's an SVG template of the theme icon with just the outline:

This is great work, CopherNeue!

I actually kinda disliked the original beach theme, but you've somehow made it come alive. Keep up it up!

Wow, this theme is almost perfect! And with SVG files. Great!

Some notes (note how few these are):

  • Either the birds should be animated, or you should try different flakes
  • (for Hedgewars inclusionSmile The sand castle could look a bit more “hedgewarsy” (Hedgewars style guide). I mean, it uses noise, but normally, Hedgewars images never use noise
  • I don't think horizont-lowres.png is actually used by the engine
  • There are some other useless files in your HWP, but that's not serious

Thank you for the feedback!

I'll have an experiment with different flakes, and even animate those little birbs in the distance. With regards to the sandcastle, its actually a remnant from the original beach files (including the horizont-lowres.png).

I'll have a look at deleting these useless files. Again, just remnants from the old Beach theme :P

Edit: Done and done!

Just to record my suggestions here.
A surfboard stuck in the sand. (not sure any surfer would ever do that w/ his precious board nowdays, but cartoon beaches often have them)
A cabana.
A lifeguard station.

Scale for the last 2 could be tricky. Was thinking the cabana could be cartoonishly tall and skinny.

I just tested version 2.

The new flakes are much better!

I noticed this graphical glitch:

If you look closely, you can see a vertical line. It seems the gradients don't perfectly match.

Sadly, version 2 has a regression: The water now looks ugly (colors don't match up). I think in version 1 it was better.

The non-matching water color is present in other themes too actually. Underwater is an example (unless mine got broken somehow).

Oh right, I was experimenting with the colours of the theme to make it more sunset-y (it didn't look that great) but I guess I forgot to revert that particular change.

Will fix when I add a few more objects to the theme Smile

FYI: The Beach theme is included in Hedgewars (developer version) since a while. Congratulations! I think this theme is a very good and welcome addition to Hedgewars. Smile

I noticed that the theme icons had the wrong sizes. This caused a graphical glitch when you selected Beach and a hand-drawn map. I already fixed this in Hedgewars.
The correct icon sizes are (as far I know) 65×64 and 33×32).

I also propose to change the water color in theme.cfg. I first want to ask if you (CopherNeue) are OK with this change:

Used colors:

water-top = 62, 123, 148
water-bottom = 43, 85, 102

Feel free to suggest different numbers to put into theme.cfg.

Because I dislike the “hard” color change in the current version. It just looks “wrong”.

EDIT: The vertical line glitch I talked about before is still present. Do you still want to fix it or should I do it for you? I think the simplest solution would be to just to a perfect vertical gradient with no oddities.

OK, since you agreed in IRC, I have fixed both things in the developer version.
Gradient has been fixed, the ugly "stripes" are gone.
Water color has been changed to that color above.
