Hello everyone! Smile

I prepared another voice-pack for Hedgewars. This time it's Polish language version of "Russian" voice set. Please, keep in mind that this is more like an interpretation rather than direct translation.

Download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ab5cdc9pnxce5rb/Russian_pl.7z?dl=1

Try it and share your thoughts with me. Wink Smiley

EDIT: Corrected version of the voice-pack is available under the link above.

OMG, this is hilarious XD
Hedgehogs from Soviet Russia. I love the idea, but the accent is too weak; it doesn't sound Russian enough.

I understand. I might have an idea how to pronounce the phrases better (more 'Russian'), but there are few ones I'm pretty satisfied with, like "Watchit.ogg" and "Nutter.ogg". Also, I don't think that re-recording "Ows" and "Offs" is necessary, since it's very difficult to put any accent in such short sounds.

Could you parhaps specify on which sounds I should work most? Or, if it's easier, the ones that can stay as they are, so I will focus on the rest...? I would be glad.

Anyway, thanks! Smile

Keep in mind that this is totally subjective, but I categorized the voices into 3 groups.

These with ok accent (some of them can still be improved, but are mostly alright):
Boring
Coward
Flawless
Hello
Melon
Nooo
Nutter
Reinforcements
Victory
Watchit
Yessir
Youllregretthat

These that have some accent, but could use some more improvements compared to above:
Enemydown
Illgetyou
Justyouwatit
Missed
Sameteam
Stupid
Takecover

And these have so weak accent, that it can't be heard at all sometimes:
Byebye
Comeonthen
Firstblood
Hurry
Incoming
Kamikaze
Laugh
Traitor
Uh-oh

I can't tell you though how to improve them, they aren't just "Russian" enough xd. But putting some foreign words seems to be most effective. Ones I don't included are short voices that don't need accent or would be difficult to make them sound any more Russian.

I decided to record almost everything again. There are still some weaker ones, but I'm afraid I reached my limit here. I prepared new "Firepunches" and they should be quite good. I think the overall impression is much better than in previous version.

The link is the same: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ab5cdc9pnxce5rb/Russian_pl.7z?dl=1

Enjoy! Wink Smiley

When you think this is ready, I will add this to DLC.

Unless another deveoper even thinks this should go into the main release.

Or, unless you are against this for some reason. If not, I also have to ask you for a license. Or would you be fine with the Hedgewars license used for most media, the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2?

I'm not happy with the name “Russian_pl” because it's confusing. It's not a Russian voice, just a Russian accent.

Probably we should rename the core voicepack “Russian” one day which has the same confusion.

The name "Russian" is what the original voicepack was called.
British is a "british stereotype" Russian is a "russian stereotype"
They are just funny voices. Like "pirate"
Probably based on well-known stereotypical voices from movies and cartoons.
"Boris" from Boris and Natasha say.

I'm gonna guess he picked this one to localise 'cause it was one of the voicepacks he rather liked.
IMO we shouldn't go renaming the existing ones w/o pretty good reason tho.

In fact, "Russian_ru" is a totally plausible thing to localise - although I gotta say I'm not sure how it'd be done ☺

Maybe a russian could weigh in. I know in French cartoon localisations they turn the french accented character into a brit accented character pretty often, and it's just awkward comedically usually.

And yeah, IMO this should be added, for sure. Localisations of decent quality are always welcome, and this is the first themed localisation which is pretty cool.

So, we have voicepacks like Pirate, Singer or even this Russian, and in fact, all of them are in English. Adding their localisations with language suffixes (like in Default) makes sense actually. Any voicepacks without suffix would have _en implicitly, like it is now.

However, this could make a mess like with this _v1 thing, so maybe frontend could be adapted to deal with these localized voicepacks somehow (like I suggested for version numbers before).

Thank you! In fact, I have many ideas for new ones!

I was wondering if the "Byebye.ogg" is not too long, because it overlaps with the explosion sound. If that's fine for you, then I'm done with this voice-pack.

I'm O.K. with the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2. Smile

My first idea was "PL_Standard" (for the "Default_pl") and "PL_Soviet", but when I read that the original names with "_pl" suffix will make the sounds be played by default in Polish version of the game, I decided to stick to this convention. My convention was LANG_Style but I fully accept the one in the game. Also, I won't have any problem if some changes are required in the naming.

Actually my favorite one is "British". Unfortunately I have no idea how to do it in Polish. Russian accent seems to me much easier to 'reproduce' (and it's funny of course). The only thing that comes to my mind regarding "British" voice-pack localisation is that I should use some more elegant words. Still, the outcome would be more like "Aristocrat_pl" rather than "British_pl".

Thanks a lot! I won't lie to you. I was aiming in official release again. Big Grin

Okay, nemo agreed to include this voicepack in official. But then I noticed something.

After a quick in-game test I had the impression the voice is a bit quiet compared to the other voices.

And a quick check in Audacity showed I'm not hallucinating this.
Example: Jump1.ogg peaks at 0.5, while the Jump1.ogg from Default peaks at about 0.8.

IMO voices should be about the same volume as the Default voice. It's not good if hog voices differ too much in volume, obviously.

Alfadur just fixed the volume of the voicepack:

Alfadur wants to know if you're OK with this.

I played the game several times with both "Default_pl" and "Russian_pl" voice-packs. I had no such impression, but maybe it's just me. Yeah, the difference can be easily noticed in AudaCity.

I'm very grateful, but I hear in the uploaded 'ogg' files that the sound quality went down. If it's just an example of improved amplitude while the official pack is stored somewhere else and is corrected without quality loss, then I'm perfectly fine. If not, please let me correct it directly in AudaCity project.

If you still have the lossless origials and can fix this yourself, please do so.

That's obviously the better way, I fully agree.

No need to throw away quality for no reason.

Russian_pl is now part of the official Hedgewars repository.
It will be part in the next release (0.9.24).

Thanks for your contribution!
