Changing the direction mid-jump

I've just have my first taste of Hedgewars!
I don't know if maybe something is wrong with my copy of the game, but my first impression was that the controls feel robotic and stiff, as I couldn't change the direction mid-jump (even the tiniest adjustments aren't allowed). Also, my character immediately loses all momentum after landing a jump. Is it a bug, or is it expected behavior?
All that behaviour is deliberate. Movement physics are deliberately cartoonish. The limits on rope control are also deliberate.
If you want to play around with changing that, scripting movement is pretty trivial in lua (for an extreme example, the space invasion mini game).
Also there's preservation of momentum (but without control) on icy surfaces (try the snow and christmas maps, with border enabled, and infinite girders).

BTW, the double jump does allow some amount of jump control (timing of the 2nd jump controls how far up and back you go).
This is useful when trying to get onto ledges in tight spaces.

Hedgewars is NOT meant to realistic. XD
Quite the opposite. And yes, the jump physics are intentionally very simplistic. Personally, I don't see how adding more complexity to jump physics would benefit the gameplay anyway.
Hi, I am a Hedgewars developer.
