No connection - illegal nickname

Hello,
I tried once to connect with an unregistered nick wich seems to be illegal because of some characters.
Now I can't change back the nick, each time I try to connect I get the illegal nickname message.
How can I fix that?
I tried to force the nick value in settings.ini, but when I retry to connect, the illegal nick come back.
edit: I can join again, but I did not understand how.
The right place to edit nick is in the config screens in the gui. If you edited it in settings.ini while the game was running it would just have gotten clobbered.
