Stats, rankings and awards on the official server — tell us what you want
Hi everyone,
We're planning statistics for games played on the official server, and before building anything we'd love your ideas. Nothing below is final, and nothing about how you play changes: no new client, nothing to install.
How it would work
After each game, the server replays it with the real game engine, quietly and in the background, and records what happened: who hit whom with what, who drowned whom, who grabbed which crate, and so on. All stats come from that replay, not from anyone's client, so they can't be faked. Results would show up a few minutes after the game ends.
What we have in mind
- Leaderboards (top 50): a skill rating that understands free-for-all games and team games, not just 1-on-1. It goes up more for beating strong players, and it needs a few games before you appear. We'd like separate boards, e.g. overall, 1-on-1, team games, and some popular game modes.
- Monthly awards: fun titles for the month's standouts.
- Player pages: your rating over time, your recent games, your awards, your favourite weapons, your best moments.
- A page for every game: teams, map and settings, who won, a stats table per hedgehog, a health-over-time graph, a timeline of kills, and a download of the replay so you can watch it in your own client.
Rankings would only count registered accounts (hedgewars.org), so nobody can play under your name.
Things we could track
- Damage and kills per weapon: bat home runs, sniper kills, the holy hand grenade, the piano, ...
- How hedgehogs died: drowned, fell, blown up, shot, a mine, a barrel, sudden death water, kamikaze, their own mistake
- Drowning credit that's actually fair: if you knocked them into the water, you get the kill, even if someone else hurt them earlier
- Distances and flights: longest shot, longest knock-back flight, highest launch, hedgehogs sent off the map
- Multi-kills in one turn, wiping out a team's last hedgehog, kills in the last second of a turn, revenge kills, chain reactions (one explosion setting off barrels, mines and dying hedgehogs)
- Survival: flawless wins, surviving on 1 HP, comebacks from the lowest health
- Utilities: time on the rope, jetpack fuel used, teleports, portals (yes, kills *through* a portal), girders placed
- Crates: collected, by type, and "stolen" crates that dropped next to someone else
- Mines and barrels: who set them off and who they hit
- Game-mode results the modes already report: Capture the Flag captures, race times, Mutant scores, and more
Award ideas (just to get you started)
*Lifeguard's Nightmare* (most enemies drowned) · *Home Run Derby* (longest bat flight) · *Eagle Eye* (longest sniper kill) · *Wrecking Ball* (most damage in a single turn) · *Clean Sweep* (most multi-kills) · *The Closer* (most teams finished off) · *Untouchable* (flawless wins) · *Hanging by a Thread* (wins with a hedgehog on 1 HP) · *Spider-Hog* (most time on the rope) · *Crate Thief* · *Chain Reaction* (longest explosion chain) · *Thinking with Portals* · *Oops* (most hedgehogs lost to their own mine)
Questions for you
1. Which stats and awards would you care about? What's missing above?
2. Should there also be "funny" awards for less glorious moments (most self-drownings, most friendly fire), or only positive ones?
3. Which game modes deserve their own leaderboard? Should games against bots count for anything?
4. Should ratings reset by season (e.g. yearly), or run forever?
5. Which games should count for ratings? For example: only games where everyone is registered, a minimum number of turns, no games where players left early?
6. How should we stop rating farming, like playing against your own second account?
7. Privacy: team chat and speech bubbles will be removed from public replays. Should game pages and replays be public for everyone, should you be able to opt out, and should guests (unregistered players) show up by name?
8. Anything else you'd want from a stats site?
Thanks! Reply here with ideas, even wild ones. We'll collect everything before deciding what to build first.
