Playing with Portals

Quick development video, its nowhere near finished, youll have sound effects, special teleportation effects and lots of other stuff once it's done, but enjoy.

It's as if a valve turns in my head, and the steam of ideas gushes into my brain. I'm so Glad I can bring these ideas to your OS. The source of this idea engine is a mystery to me.

Good idea. Those portals would also be great as random map objects (maybe with a different colours).

One question: will the portals disappear after your turn? (pls not)

At the moment, portals last until end of turn. That may change, but that's the way it is setup right now. Balancing fairness of this is something that still needs working on.

Another thing that could change is how many portals there can be. Right now when creating a link, the most recent other portal is used, that could also change, but also limits to 2 portals ever.

Some of this could be handled in game scheme options, to avoid screwing up Default w/ settings that unbalance the turn based aspect.

What happens if you shoot a ninja rope through a portal?... that could be interesting.

Ninja rope does not work through portals, you can portal through them on rope, which has odd effects. We'll probably disconnect ninja rope if you go through a portal.

Don't even need to bat them, just place the portal below 'em.
Which is why this weapon will need restrictions and balancing.

still being worked on, but piano strike (of course), gas grenade and sine gun.

What about the Bowling Ball? That would be a very useful weapon.

That will be an amazing addition to Hedgewars! While watching the video I thought of numerous ways to alter the gameplay just by using this weapon, it will be fun! Big Grin

Very nice. ^^ But it's - as nemo said - too powerful. To make it weaker maybe you should make the throwing of the portal activators (or whatever they're called) like a throwing of a grenade that is - affected by gravity and perhaps even wind. Because now it's way to easy to place the portals on the places where you want them to be. And again - very very nice. Great work!

but... how "sine gun" will work? I know "sine" is a name of trigonometric function, but i don't see it as a weapon.
And also, what will happen if only one portal will be made and hedgehog will try to jump into it?

Ok. Smile Because it looks like the thing is flying on a straight line from the gun's mouth to the point of impact. Even if so, I think it'll be much more challenging to make it fly like a grenade. Smile

Could we hae some info on the sine gun please. I don't think I have heard of that one. I can gues what gas grenade does though. I also saw you mucking about with that on Cia.vc.

the sine gun is awesome. i dont want to blow it for everybody so i wont say what it does, but devs please leave the recoil as is - that was very cool. Big Grin

the gas grenade we have all talked about before and is going to be a great addition.

the piano isn't that bad because you lose your hog in the process. i will probably make a weapons scheme that doesn't include it at first but allow you to get it from boxes and set the probability higher. that is one of the reasons i love this game bc i can set the controls for any round and any parameter when i am hosting.

try hitting your F keys (f1 f2 f3 etc) when the piano is falling

Hehe thanks, the sine gun was just a random idea I had.
If it makes it into the next release then it might be in another way that it is now. (I already changed the shot to get wider with higher distance, even hogs will fit through then. haven't uploaded it to svn yet though)
I'm currently focusing on the portal gun, but the sine gun will be worked on a lot too, later.
I intend to make it charge-able (less charged=slower but more shots, with less ground impact/damage per shot)

I really intend to leave the recoil in the way it is because I had a lot of fun with it and it gives the sine gun some sort of utility character if used in the right situation - or leads to funny results if used unwisely Big Grin

Feel free to send me a pm or 2 if you have any nice ideas regarding those weapons.

don't disconect rope if you go trough a portal.
It could be a begining of a new tactic.

P.S.:Is there a way we could download a beta version of portal gun to try it out?

codebracker, if you're running linux, you can simply build latest HEAD. It is very easy to do in linux, just a few commands. I'd be happy to play you online.

If you're using windows, Smaxx did a build recently (see the "Give me HEAD" thread). It isn't quite up to date, but I guess I could downgrade the engine to play you sometime.

i'm using windows, and would want to know how to install or uninstall a build (or find a thread for that matter Kirby Mask! the forum needs a search program).
