The following is a list of websites which has reviewed Hedgewars:

Softpedia.com

October, 2011: Softpedia's editor reviews the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"The core principle of the Hedgewars is so clear and easy that it’s almost to simple to work. If in the Worms series there were two teams of worms facing each other with all sorts of weapons, on various maps, in Hedgewars, the enemies are obviously hedges."

"We can summarize that Hedgewars is a more complex game that anyone can imagine, and giving the fact that there isn’t a stable version available, there will be a lot more features implemented."

Pros:

  • "Fun and free, the perfect combination"
  • Can be played locally, on a LAN or on the internet
  • Many possibilities for customisation

Cons:

  • "This is one of those games that have managed to get everything right, even before arriving at a stable release. We couldn't find anything wrong with it and we hope it stays that way."

Softonic.com

Softonic's reviewer James Thornton takes a quick dive into the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"Hedgewars proves to be a fun and amusing diversion, which is great to look at with some hilarious sound effects and speech. Just like Worms, its beauty lies in the fact that no two games you play in Hedgewars will ever be the same, as terrains are randomly generated every time."

Pros:

  • "Cute, colorful graphics"
  • "Fun sound effects"
  • "Unique gameplay"

Cons:

  • "Controls feel a little strange initially"

Hak5.org

Hak5's reviewer Snubs includes a video review on the desktop version of Hedgewars in Hak5's E3 2010 coverage

"If you're familiar with Worms, you'll probably like this game called Hedgewars. It's so fun! It's a turn-based strategy game with little Hedgehogs that create huge devastation with an array of weapons."

"Hedgewars is open-source, which means you can download the code and you can mess with it to your heart's desire. It's for Windows, Mac and Linux, but it also includes binaries and packages for all the major platforms like Ubuntu, Gentoo and FreeBSD. It also supports local and local and networked games, which is great because I love my LAN-party games!"

PolishLinux.org

May, 2009: PolishLinux's reviewer Adam M. writes in great detail about the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"The game is very playable itself and may entertain you for many hours. If you liked Worms, you’ll certainly love Hedgewars and if you have never heard of them before, it is time indeed to get to know them."

"Hedgewars seems to be untouched by current trends and retains its own identity. It also brings a lot of fresh air into the genre, as it didn’t try to pretend just another Worms clone. Although it keeps all of it’s greatness. It’s definitely worth to play!"

Pros:

  • Extensive online multiplayer
  • Visually appealing
  • Same feeling as Worms

Cons:

  • Only one round per match
  • Lacks sheep weapon and jetpack
  • Modest animations

AppAddict.net

September, 2010: AppAddict's reviewer Ben Briggs gives a take on the iPad version of Hedgewars.

"You’d be hard pressed to find a game of this type that has this much entertainment for the price asked for; the AI puts up a good fight and pass and play multiplayer works as well as it does for Worms, but in effect you’re paying for a poor man’s version of the game. Hedgewars lacks an identity of its own and simply photocopies Team17’s work and the result is not as good as the original."

Pros:

  • Very customizable
  • Challenging AI
  • Good multiplayer experience

Cons:

  • Lacks own identity
  • Control issues from desktop port
  • Incohesive graphics

FreewareGenius.com

October, 2008: FreewareGenius's reviewer Samer Kurdi writes about the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"The verdict: a very well made multi-platform Worms clone that is free, fun, and offers some good production qualities (especially with respect to some of the soundtracks and levels that they offer, which are very nice). I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they might pay more attention to the control system with respect to weapons selection. Overall a very good effort."

Pros:

  • "Excellent graphics and audio"
  • "Excellent playability and physics"

Cons:

  • "Controls are a bit chunky"
  • "Not able to connect to any game servers"

TheGameHippo.com

TheGameHippo's reviewer LCom takes a quick look at the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"What sets this game apart from other artillery games is a greater emphasis on movement. On your turn before you fire, you can walk, jump, ninja rope, teleport, dig, and even make new floors with girders. There's also one other thing this game has that Worms doesn't: Hats. Each member of your team gets not only a name, but also a hat! (and it's relatively easy to add more hats too.)"

"The game is perfect as a hot-seat party game, with up to 6 players on a single computer, but there is also smooth online play as well. Either way proves to be a fun way to play."

Apellius.BlogSpot.com

October, 2011: Appellius's reviewer shows equal part review and guide.

"The gameplay is simple: use your hedgehogs to blow up your opponent's hedgehogs. Every turn, players take control of a single hedgehog and use an arsenal of weapons to destroy their opponents in the most ridiculous and creative ways possible. Explosive cakes, remote control airplanes, and even portal guns - the possibilities are endless."

"I give way too many games a score of 8.5, but it's true. Hedgewars' gameplay is really good, as well as the addition of new equipment, but the gameplay could be a tiny bit more fluid. But it's a very good game, and being open-sourced adds to the awesomeness of it all."

Pros:

  • "Open source"
  • "Humourous (and inside jokes)"
  • "Good gameplay"

Cons:

  • "Poor AI"
  • "Glitching campaign mode"

Score: 8.5

UbuntuDaily.BlogSpot.com

March, 2011: UbuntuDaily reviews the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"Multiplayer is this games biggest advantage; you'll get bored after playing against the simple AI computer. You can choose between 3 modes for this: Local (on the same computer), LAN (on your home network), and Internet. The internet server is never empty so you'll always have someone to play and you can choose to go to the Beginners or Experts rooms depending on your level. I never play single player anymore as multiplayer is so much better."

My favourite game on Ubuntu - great for passing the hours on a rainy day or the 5 minutes before dinner. Make sure you have a decent internet connection however, if you want the full potential of Hedgewars.

CriticalCreig.org

May, 2010: CriticalCreig's reviewer Creig P. Sherburne write about the many aspects of Hedgewars.

"You can also put masks and hats on your hedgehogs. My team, The Lemmy’s, have a little skull mask. A computer team I made, The Pirates, have a pirate hat. I also made a Star Wars team who all have Darth Vader masks on. Loads of choices here. It’s one of those thoughtful, silly little things that make the game so much fun. Hats don’t actually improve the game play, but add to the overall fun vibe."

"I’ll make it simple for you: if you like video games, any kind of video game, get Hedgewars. It’s free and will work on your computer. It’s every bit as fun as Worms was, you don’t have to pirate it or install Windows on your computer. And if you don’t, at least check out the trailers. The first one has a chipmunks-sounding version of Bohemian Rhapsody playing while the hedgehogs blow each other up. Cute!"

Pros:

  • Works on Macs, Windows and Linux
  • High quality maps
  • Masks and hats

Cons:

  • Some weapons seem under-powered
  • Small hedgehog vocabulary
  • Configuration screens are confusing

TuxArena.com

December, 2010: TuxArena's Creciun Dan takes time writing a review of the desktop version of Hedgewars

"Weapons include the usual bazooka, grenades, cluster bombs, dynamite, happy birthday cake, kamikaze, or even seduction, a weapon which will make the enemy hogs jump towards you (used best to make them jump into a gap or whole)."

"All-in-all, Hedgewars is great. It succeeds in recreating that special feeling you had when playing the original Worms game, and it does it actually better. Great configurability, nice sounds and great music, both single player and online playing support, these are its strong points. Give it a try if you haven’t already!"

LetsProgram.com

June, 2011: LetsProgram's Petter does a video review and gameplay demonstration of the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"The game is like Worms. Actually it kinda IS Worms! Its not the usual ”worms”, you play with. Its little round Alien-things ;) Otherwise, its the same. You choose weapons and fight eachother! You can play online, LAN or against the computer. You can also set up your own game/level. I recommend this game to all Worms lovers. Linux FTW!"

"I love this game. I know I suck, but I love it."

Unigamesity.com

November, 2008: Unigamesity's reviewer George writes about his views on the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"The first game that I played was Hedgewars. Remember Worms Armageddon? Well, that’s what Hedgewars is. The best part is that even if it’s a worms clone it’s a very good one, and above all, it’s a functional one. Unfortunately older versions of Worms are not working at all in Vista and Worms 3D just doesn’t do it anymore."

"All in all, Hedgewars is a very good, freeware, turn based strategy, that can prove to be quite a good resource for fun and relaxation, especially when you play against a human opponent."

Pros:

  • "Can be played both on Linux and Windows"
  • "Multi or single player, over the Internet or locally."
  • "Many varieties of weapons"

Cons:

  • "The controls are not very well implemented"

FreeMobileApplications.net

FreeMobileApplications's staff does a quick review of the mobile version of Hedgewars.

"If you thought those invertebrates in Worms were vicious modest blighters, then pass the time till you’ve check out Hedgewars, in which armies of hedgehogs pit their wits hostile to all and every other."

"Hedgewars proves to be a enjoyable and droll regeneration, which is splendid to search at with some hilarious signal things and address. Solely be fond of Worms, its beauty lies in the simple fact that no two games you play in Hedgewars will ever be the very same, as terrains are randomly bent all and every time."

Pros:

  • A substantial range of tools and weapons
  • Randomly generated terain

Cons:

  • "Controlling Hedgewars is modest weird to start off with"

3DVision-Blog.com

September, 2011: 3DVision-Blog's reviewer looks at the desktop version of Hedgewars from a 3D perspective.

"It is available not only for Windows, but for Mac OS X and Linux as well and thus is OpenGL based, meaning that although the game supports multiple stereo 3D output modes it will not work with 3D Vision. The style of the game does not present a lot of options for a lot of depth or pop-out effects, but the stereo 3D support makes the game feel a bit nicer, even though the background may look a but too flat."

"I was not able to find a key combination for controlling the level of depth or convergence in order for the user to try tweaking the 3D-ness of the game and that would’ve been a nice thing to have, but hopefully such a feature will be added in future game releases. So no you can go ahead and try the game, you may like it and it is free, so there is absolutely nothing to loose."

Podnova.com

Podnova's reviewer has a glance at the desktop version of Hedgewars.

"For a game that is turn-based, Hedgewars (just like Worms) is a lot of fun. There are servers where you can play against other people from all over the world, or you can simply play against the CPU or another human player on your computer. This is an open-source project and there are versions for Windows and Mac OS X. I have personally tried both, and they look great. The most fun is attained when playing against other people, though."
