Well, I'll try and make a start now, I'm at school though, so I might not have enough time.

Hi Smile

The image of the game menu in section "Getting started" is too small. The explanations in the image should be in a bright color because of the dark blue background. Hard to see them. The arrows could be more...hedgewars-looking. Like this tutorial here:

I know Smile It's just a draft for now, I created it to explain, but I hope that someone else can create a new image better than mine!Anyway I don't think that the image is too small, think about it, every manual doesn't show an image of each screen as big as the manual, it's a little image to show each button/function, and it's quite enough to comprehend how does it work.
That page is not finished yet, I have to show the other screens and gameplay, so wait and stay tuned!
Thank you!

Badly written,

"In Hedgewars, you play on levels, known as 'maps' which are the setting for a game."

Dumb sentence.

"Pre-defined maps are a 32-bit 2048 x 1024 .png image file named "map.png", and all modifications to the map (like terrain damage) are created in-game dynamically."

You haven't explained that there are randomly generated maps yet, also modifications are made, not "created". Don't use the word "like".

"Maps can be designed with many programs, the most common being Adobe Photoshop, and they are stored inside: Installation Directory/share/hedgewars/maps/Data/Maps/"

This is simply not true, I'm probably the only person who uses photoshop to draw graphics for Hedgewars.

"Maps call for Themes with a .cfg file called map.cfg. Inside is simply just one line of text with the name of the appropriate theme. e.g. "Bamboo"."

The word "inside" makes no sense, Inside what? You need to be more specific, or simply say "This text file contains a single line of text that references the name of the theme to be used in conjunction with the terrain."

"There is also the maps preview icon (a scaled down copy of map.png), at the size of 256 x 128."

What does the preview icon do? What is it for? Where is it stored? Shouldn't this sentence start with "Maps also have a preview icon, this is used in the frontend to..."

"These are displayed in the upper left corner of the team/map selection screen. Alongside the normal, pre-defined maps are randomly generated maps. To change the generated map, click on the image in the upper left where the map's preview icon is."

Sentences like this are confusing, just use a god damn screenshot, instead of trying to DESCRIBE the frontend.

Well, thanks for the crits. It is a WIP after all.
I'll modify accordingly, but I couldn't take screenshots at the time, I had to make it look like I was working (I was at school after all), so notepad/Openoffice were the only suitable options at the time.

I'll work on it tomorrow. Smile

Hi Tiyuri! Can you make for me some images like turns left for weapons? I'm thinking to use them to show the different things in the in-game screenshot. I'll add them to what I have to explain, like:

A. This is your active hedgehog, press the arrow keys to move it left or right, or up and down to move the aim. Then choose your weapon (B) and fire with space key.
B. This is your ammo scheme. Press right click to show it and choose the weapon you need with left click.

..etc...

Josh, I think it would be better if you show also a screenshot of the select button opened and a screenshot with a predefined map already selected.

What's with the Game Guide and the ugly wall of badly written text, daimadoshi85? Smile Has to be more estetic or what? Wink Smiley

Ah, something I forgot to ask. I wrote about the Deagle that the maximum damage is 10 including the extra damage utility. Is this right? Do we have to consider this utility always and add it to the maximum damage of the weapon (that is - without the utility activated)? If not, maybe you should change this or if it's a "yes", then make corrections about the bazooka and it's max.dmg.

And since I've mentioned the word "correction" - daimadoshi85, don't forget to update the table with weapons in the manual. So that those who write (hope more will come Smile), know that it's up to date with the latest release. Of course this update can't be made before the release but right after it.

About the structure of the table with weapons - maybe change is needed. Some kind of grouping:

WEAPONS
GRANADE-WEAPONS - red and green granade, think TNT, cake and mine will be good here etc.
ROCKET-WEAPONS - bazooka, UFO etc.
CLOSE DISTANCE WEAPONS - firepunch, whip, seduction, etc.
AIRSTRIKE-WEAPONS - napalm, airstrike, RC plane, minestrike etc.
SUPERWEAPONS - watermelon bomb, ballgun etc.
OTHER WEAPONS - cake etc.
UTILITIES - rope, parachute, girder etc.

This is of course just an example grouping. Something like a catalog.

Tiyuri wrote about the ugly written wall of text, we should ask to him Smile . About the table now it's structured as it is the weapons table in game, and you're right, we must update it.

Have a request to the HW-team - can you give us the exact values that each weapon can deal (damage I mean) so that we don't have to try over and over some weapon before we describe it and after all - not to be sure that's the right number we put in the max.dmg-section. Some kind of a table or similar thingie.

Now the question - when writing the max.damage that a weapon deals do we have to include the "extra damage"-utility or do we have to ignore it and write the max.dmg that a weapon deals without any side influence?

Thanks in advance.

Ah, sorry Smile I'm stupid and blind Big Grin The other question remains though - do we have to add to these values the x1.5 from the "extra damage"-utility? I'm not quite sure here...Yes, the utilitiy isn't part of the weapon (confused here) but it adds to the damage it deals. So...? Geek

*Bump*

Well, I've noticed a problem with the wiki, even though I have edit permissions, I cannot view the changelog. (That thing at the bottom that says "Log Message: An explanation of the additions or updates being made to help other authors understand your motivations.") I've asked nemo about it, but he hasn't the time. If a dev could fix this, that'd be great.

Maybe I am the only one who cares about that, but the HTML code of the Wiki (the index, though) is not valid as the W3C want it to.

Someone should correct that, someday. It's not a urgent problem, but a valid page can avoid a lot of problems (for example, people who use a browser that can't understand that code).
I can't do it because I'm already doing the translation into French, and I want to concentrate on that.

For example of what I've seen :

* The tag </br> is completely wrong. The correct form is <br />.
* The tag <img src=></img> does NOT exist.
It's a single tag : <img src="" /> (with quotes around the URL)

I think I've seen other things, but I don't remember.
I really hope (and don't think) I'm not actually teaching things to you. :-/

There is a *lot* of broken (X)HTML on the site. This template is far from clean. And heck, using br tag is not exactly semantic.
However, while silly, a close tag for br is valid XHTML1.0.

Ofc, since it isn't serving the right content type to browsers w/ the appropriate accept line, it isn't really XHTML 1.0 either.
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_ACCEPT} !application/xhtml\+xml
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} \.xhtml$
RewriteRule .* - [type=text/html]

So is one for img. If only img had had this "syntactic sugar" we could have more easily had fallbacks worked into the (X)HTML5 spec.
In fact, nested image tags w/ fallbacks will work in some browsers (Firefox for example), and is even valid w/ an extending DTD. It just never made it into the spec.

It is certainly unattractive, and feel free to fix it on that grounds, but it isn't *invalid*.

Don't believe me?
Try http://validator.w3.org Smile

That being said, feel free to tidy up if you like.

Well, of course I tried the validator. And that's the point : I get Invalid, with 28 errors in XHTML strict and 24 errors in HTML5.

One of these is : " Line 63, Column 5: end tag for element "br" which is not open". It's like I said : the form is not valid.
(http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hedgewars.org%2Fwiki.html&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=XHTML+1.0+Strict&group=0&user-agent=W3C_Validator%2F1.3)

I just say that : the code is not valid, and it would be great to get that valid.
It's not a big deal though, I don't wanna start an argument about that, especially when I know I can make mistakes. ^_^

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fm8y.org%2Ftmp%2Ftestcase269.xhtml&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

The problems w/ validity are due to failures in serving the correct content type and the site in general.

They are not due to what you said.

See the link above.

As I said, feel free to correct any errors you find though.

Why does not every registered HW player have edit permissions for this wiki automatically?

I think a wiki is editable by anyone by definition. So please either give every registered HW player edit permissions or don't call it "wiki" (what about "elitist encyclopædia where only a handful of users are allowed to contribute" instead?).

Because registration and vandalism is way too easy.

Editing available on request.
Unless, I guess, person is being kind of a jerk.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

Random editing is by no means a required capability, and less practical on small sites where staff is already shorthanded and overwhelmed (hedgewars).
