Highlander

Things are gonna chaaaannnge around here!

Heya Hedgewars fanatics! Lately I've seen a ton of you playing the Highlander DLC. With a bit of luck, we'll be releasing 0.9.17 soon. Thus, due to the growing popularity of the mode, we've decided to include it officially as part of the new release.

That said, I've also tried to balance a few things where they felt lacking.

Below, I've listed some of the changes I've made to the mode, along with my motivation for doing so. Feel free to leave a comment below or suggest other alterations. If you make good points (and can validate them) I'll consider it!

All hogs start with kamikaze: This allows you the option to get rid of "weaker hogs" who are stuck in some hole and otherwise incapable of killing themselves. Even your weaker hogs are now dangerous in that they might knock a stronger hog into the drink.

Extra Time removed: As I see it, this utility wasn't doing anything for the fun of the mode. Generally, you either get stuck with a hog who doesn't find the Extra Time particularly helpful (You'd rather have something to help make you more mobile), or it allows for stronger hogs to keep rampaging much longer--further upsetting game balance.

Vampirism removed: Players have complained that Vampirism generally allows for stronger hogs to live forever. Once a strong hog gets going it becomes almost impossible to stop them and the game soon becomes boring.

Mudball, Hammer removed: These two weapons are very situation dependent. While it's true not all hogs are born equal, I felt players would rather have something slightly more useful than be stuck with a hog that only has a highly limited selection.

Landgun is now considered a utility: This was a bug, of sorts. Now it's fixed.

Firstly thanks for the great script, and putting effort into balancing it out again and again. Smile

Changes mostly seem reasonable, though I'd reconsider two things.

Firstly, when you say "start with kamikaze" do you mean that only in the first turn do they have it, and after that not? Personally, I think it would be wiser to (if it's possible, which I'm pretty sure it is) have the team, for the whole game, have kamikaze, though only half as many as it's total hog count. Otherwise, if each hog has it, there would be a kamikaze fiesta which would be kind of stupid and lead the game to end quickly. Limiting it to only half the hogs makes that you're more careful with wasting it.

Secondly, please don't remove mudball! No particular reason for it, aside the joy of seeing someone else stuck with it.

I won a game once by having my last hog sink the strongest hog using a mudball Big Grin so your schadenfreude may not be always justified Big Grin

you could also remove the seduction, it's not a good weapon...

Nice! Highlander has always been my favourite mode when im relaxing from a fast, heart-pumping, fierce game of shoppa. Since people play this game more and more, i would wish this mode would be polished more since its getting official. Like for instance, #1 when a hog dies, an orb flies from the dead body and goes to the killer (showing that the weapon has been stolen).
#2 there are some sort of announcer or notification showing weapon steal

The problem with the mudball is that it's extremely ineffective when there's no opportunity to displace another hog far enough to even effect the battle. If there's a hog in a hole with a mudball fighting a hog with something that does more than 1 damage, then the latter is surely going to win.

When I play highlander I have to sometimes strategically get rid of hogs with situational weapons, but don't have the situation. To me they are more useful not taking my more powerful hogs' turns and are better off living under the ocean.

Is the script-pack already updated or do we have to wait for 9.17?

sweet! i've been playing highlander and only highlander since i discovered it. i always create a room called "getting highlander"
nice changes btw.

also.. is there a way to lock "aerial" weapons when you play highlander on a cave map¿? that would be nice.

PS. i cant upgrade to 0.9.17 Sad Smiley since im in ubuntu, i hope it gets released soon.
