GSoC applications accepted! Android and AI

Hello everybody,
we can finally announce the selected applications from the Google Summer of Code 2011 program. We only had two slots so we had to discard many many really good applications; hopefully next year we will get more slots and more people will be able to participate!

Without further ado, let me present you

Richard "Xeli" Deurwaarder, mentored by nemo, will take care of the Android port
David "dayoung" Young, mentored by unC0Rr, will teach AI how to use the weapons

and they will soon™ write a full introduction on this blog as well as keep us updated with their progress, asking for community feedback! Quoting nemo here, "no pressure or anything, but success of our future participation is all on you"

Finally we want to formward our personal thank you to all the students that participated: without your contribution we could never have such a positive feeback! I hope you all had a great time in the channel and remember that you are welcome to stay with our community and to contribute to the project!

Good luck and let's hope for a positive and enriching summer!

Find pairings and other important information here.

NOTE: If you lost in the first round, you're still in. If you want to withdraw, please let me know, but it's really just a bit of fun... so don't take losing too seriously.

UPDATE: Once again, I've extended the deadline. Deadline is Friday 29th. I'm considering giving you 10 days for each round that follows, instead of just a week.

Tournament gets underway

First round pairings are up. You have until midnight on Sunday 17th, GMT. Find pairings here.

If you haven't already done so, please read the rules (and reread, there's a lot. I thought of everything). Check out this and that.

Also, if you're having trouble contacting your opponent, write something here. That way we know you've at least tried to get your game going.

Good luck, have fun. Play nice. Smile

UPDATE: Due to several games not being played, you now have a couple of extra days. Deadline is Tuesday at midnight.

GSoC reminder - 1 day left for applications

Dear students willing to apply,
please do so now! You have less than 24 hours to submit you application duly filled; you'll have some time later on this week to improve it and add sections, but make sure to use your slot.
Unfortunately there cannot be any deadline extension; the application must be compiled at Google-Melange portal, the ones posted in the forum are not valide for a successful submission.

Update: 67 applications total! thank you to all paricipants

Waiting for 0.9.16?

Me too! What are these devs doing?! pounce.png

It's been a few months since our last release, and while 0.9.16 is still a ways off, I thought I'd write a short post to let you know we haven't forgotten about you. We're working on it, and it's looking good. :)

A while ago I asked whether the community was more interested in our standard mission maps or the new gameplay modes that came with 0.9.15's release. To my surprise, most of you said, "Gameplay modes". The video above showcases one of the modes for 0.9.16 that I've been working on. It's pretty game-breaking (I love you unC0Rr!), but I hope you'll like it.

It looks like our next release is going to be a really interesting one. It should go without saying that we've squashed a lot of bugs, updated translations, and in general, made the game more awesome! There are some exciting new weapons, as well as a couple of new themes and maps in the mix. Other weapons (mudball, hammer, drillstrike) have also seen some surprising changes and mines will be even more deadly for those who know how to use them. We've also added some 3D support, better snow graphics, reworked the server, and we're continuing to add "much much moreTM".

Perhaps most importantly, we have been receiving an enormous number of applications for Google Summer of Code and with that comes the potential promise of many new cool features. I'm looking forward to see our GSoC student's projects grow into something great.

Good luck out there!
